Co-Evolution of Microstructure and Properties

Image of SEM micrograph showing hydride particles. The images transitions from the SEM image to a finite element mesh of a simulated microstructure
Hydrides in zirconium, transitioning from an SEM image to a MOOSE reconstruction of the microstructure.

Microstructure evolves in materials in harsh environments, changing the properties and degrading performance.
We investigate the fundamental material behaviors governing this evolution and the corresponding changes in performance using mesoscale modeling and simulation.

We employ the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment, an open-source finite element framework, to simulate the material behavior.
